A hiker trapped between rocks in Australia has had his leg amputated

A man had his leg amputated after he spent more than 20 hours between rocks in Australia. This was reported by The Independent newspaper on November 23.
It is noted that the 60-year-old tourist was rafting on the Franklin River as part of a group in the south-west of Tasmania. He fell and was squeezed between the rocks on the rapids.
It took rescuers several attempts to free the man, who was partially submerged in the water. The hiker eventually had to have his left leg amputated above the knee.
"This was a life and death situation and after consulting with the patient, the decision was made to amputate his leg to be able to extract him from the crevice in the rock," Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Doug Osterloo commented on the incident.
According to Osterloo, the man's condition is currently assessed as critical.
"However, it is quite clear from the medical reports that if he had remained in place and was trapped in the crevice of the rock, he would not have survived," - emphasized the Assistant Commissioner.
Earlier, on November 22, six tourists died in the tourist town of Vang Vieng in Laos after drinking tainted liquor containing methanol during a vacation. Local authorities are investigating the incident.
