US to list giraffes as endangered animals

TheUnited States for the first time will include giraffes in the list of endangered animals. This was reported by The Guardian on November 23.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hopes that the inclusion of giraffes in the list of endangered species will put an end to poaching. It is noted that in the States, giraffe skin is used to make rugs, pillowcases, shoes, and furniture.
"Federal protection of giraffes will help protect a vulnerable species, promote biodiversity conservation, support ecosystem health, combat wildlife trafficking and promote sustainable economic practices," the newspaper quotes the director of the Fish and Wildlife Service Martha Williams.
It is specified that the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2018 has already included several subspecies of giraffes in the list of endangered species. This time, three subspecies of the northern giraffe, found mainly in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Uganda, will join the list, as will two subspecies from East Africa - the reticulated and Maasai.
In January it was reported that five species of animals and plants were included in the Red Book of the Moscow region. The list of rare species was supplemented by the common hamster, the dryad velvet butterfly, the bison, the European ramalina lichen and the lacquered trutovik mushroom.
