Ukrainian border guards have detained four men who evaded conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), who paid $10,000 each to a guide and tried to swim across the Tisa River on an inflatable boat. The Ukrainian State Border Service said this on November 23 in its Telegram channel.

The Department specified that the evaders were detained on the border between Ukraine and Hungary, and the Tisa has now reached full water. The guide promised the men a supposedly safe route, but for their money they received only a rubber boat and put their lives in danger. Administrative reports will be drawn up in respect of the detainees, and the evaders will be held liable according to the law.

Earlier, on November 14, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained 10 people for helping evaders, including a city council deputy and the head of a department of the district military enlistment office. They helped men liable for military duty to illegally enroll in educational institutions and go abroad. All detainees face up to 10 years in prison.

Before that, on September 6, Ukrainian evaders attempted to escape to Belarus through a minefield. The State Border Service of Ukraine emphasized that the men "almost blew themselves up."

Later, on October 16, women in Zakarpattya in western Ukraine tried to overturn the bus of military officers - they started pushing and rocking it. The vehicle still managed to drive away, but the women threw stones after it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski (term of office expired on May 20) signed the law on toughening mobilization on April 16. The document lists the categories of citizens who are subject to conscription. In addition, it toughens penalties for evading service in the AFU, but there are no provisions on demobilization.

Martial law in Ukraine has been in effect since February 2022. Later, the Verkhovna Rada repeatedly extended it. Most men aged between 18 and 60 are banned from leaving the country.
