On November 23, Dmitri Semiryadov, a nutritionist and nutritionist, told Sputnik Radio in an interview about the signs, causes and prevention of dementia.

According to the specialist, dementia is a gradual deterioration of the body's cognitive functions. The disease damages brain cells, which leads to deterioration of memory and speech. Due to the fading of thinking functions, it is important to recognize the disease in its early stages and take preventive measures.

The doctor attributes the causes of dementia to depression, as depressive episodes can cause negative changes in the cortical structures of the brain, side effects of certain drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, thyroid problems, sedentary lifestyle, as well as a deficiency of vitamins C, D, B vitamins, zinc, omega-3.

Semiryadov noted that there is no single test to determine dementia in a person. The disease is diagnosed based on careful collection of medical history, laboratory tests, physical examination and characteristic changes in thinking, daily activities and behavior.

"Early diagnosis of dementia should focus on subtle changes in short-term memory, forgetfulness - difficulty remembering recent events and confusion with names, dates and times are common symptoms of dementia along with repetition of the same questions or snippets of information. People with onset dementia may suddenly start having trouble continuing or joining in conversations. Misplaced objects, such as the kettle in the bathroom, can also be signs that indicate an abnormal brain condition," said the specialist.

The nutritionist emphasized that the disease is incurable, but it can be slowed down or prevented, including through a balanced diet.

"One of the best options is a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil. Increasing protein intake helps reduce the risk of cognitive impairment in old age, but red meat is best consumed no more than two to three times a week in small amounts. Regular exercise also improves brain connectivity and cell health, which slows disease progression," Semiryadov said, adding that B vitamins, vitamins D, C and E, and omega-3, especially in combination, can have a beneficial effect on brain health.

Earlier, on November 21, in a conversation with Izvestia, therapist Oksana Pivovarova, professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, attributed sharp mood swings and memory lapses to the signs of dementia. Among them, Pivovarova also named high blood pressure, which leads to cerebral hypoxia, and excessive use of alcohol and drugs, the consequence of which is deterioration of cognitive functions.

Before that, on November 5, nutritionist nutritionist Larisa Gabdulkhakova told "Izvestia" about the influence of excess weight on the appearance of dementia. According to the expert, it is especially dangerous on the stomach, because it actively releases inflammatory substances and molecules, thereby causing inflammation throughout the body.
