Abuse of biologically active supplements (BAAs) can lead to the development of allergies, as well as to problems with the natural mechanisms of body regulation. Vera Serezhina, a medical expert at the medical company LabQuest, warned about this on Friday, November 22.

"Unlike medicines, dietary supplements are supplements that enrich nutrition with essential substances that are lacking in the body. When they are used properly, in courses and as prescribed by a doctor, they are generally safe. However, if a person begins to perceive dietary supplements as a universal means to maintain health or a panacea for all diseases, the consequences can be unpleasant," she said in conversation with Lenta.Ru.

According to the expert, the use of a large number of different drugs at the same time may be unsafe: some substances may be absorbed worse in combination with others, which reduces their effectiveness, and sometimes causes side effects.

Serezhina added that hypersensitivity can occur with constant intake of dietary supplements.

"The immune system begins to perceive the components of dietary supplements as harmful substances, which leads to the production of antibodies. This can provoke allergic reactions, immune disorders and even autoimmune diseases. For example, there are known cases when the long-term use of supplements based on blueberries, intended to improve vision, led not to the expected result, but to the development of autoimmune damage to blood vessels," - said the expert.

On the eve of "Izvestia" reported in Rospotrebnadzor that at the request of the supervisory agency, the operator of the state labeling system "Honest Mark" suspended the possibility of retail sale of dietary supplements containing substances melatonin and simethicone prohibited in the manufacture of such products.

A total of 5.5 million packages of dietary supplements from 44 manufacturers and 31 importers were blocked for sale, including 2.4 million units with simethicone and more than 3.1 million units with melatonin, reports the agency of city news "Moscow".

According to the technical regulation of the Customs Union "On the safety of food products" (TR CU 021/2011), melatonin and simethicone are among the substances that are prohibited to use in the production of dietary supplements.
