Approximately 27% of Russians resort to the use of painkillers on a weekly basis. Such regular and uncontrolled use can have a negative impact on the gastrointestinal tract, contributing to erosive and ulcerative changes in the mucosa of the stomach and 12-perestine. Gastroenterologist, associate professor of the Department of Internal Medicine, Nephrology, General and Clinical Pharmacology with a course of pharmacy of the Northwestern State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, MD Sergei Tikhonov told "Izvestia" on November 24 about the harm of regular use of painkillers.

According to the expert, in an effort to get rid of pain syndromes, many people often resort to popular means with analgesic effect, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

"These drugs effectively suppress pain, but negatively affect the GI tract, causing various problems. Their use dramatically increases the likelihood of damage to the mucous membrane of the stomach and 12-perestine," Tikhonov explained.

According to him, NSAIDs can reduce inflammation and pain sensations, but they also reduce the protective functions of the mucosa, impairing blood supply and reducing the production of protective mucus. As a result, acidic gastric juice, bile, and other corrosive substances can damage the gastrointestinal mucosa.

"Regular intake of painkillers is dangerous for health. But if you can not do without them, it is important to protect the GI tract with special drugs from the group of proton pump inhibitors, which reduce the aggressive effects of gastric juice and protect the mucosa from damage," added Tikhonov.

The doctor notes that a systematic check of the condition of the gastrointestinal tract is of great importance. If there are symptoms of GI diseases or prolonged use of NSAIDs, you should consult a gastroenterologist.

"If you experience discomfort in a certain area for more than a few days and the cause of its occurrence is unknown to you, it is a direct indication to visit a specialist. Such symptoms signal a possible problem in the body, and for a long-term solution it is necessary to eliminate their cause," - concluded the expert.

Earlier, on November 21, doctor-gastroenterologist "SM-Clinica" Evgenia Melnikova told "Izvestia" about habits that destroy the pancreas. First of all, according to her, such bad habits as alcohol consumption and smoking affect the pancreas.
