Matvienko called Russia's electoral system one of the best in the world
Russia's electoral system is one of the best in the world, while electoral democracy is actually degenerating in the West. This was stated by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko on November 22.
"The Russian electoral system has been developing along the lines outlined by the convention. Today it is one of the best, and this is recognized in the world, efficient, technological and democratic. This is especially noticeable against the background of the actual degeneration of electoral democracy in the countries of the so-called Western world," she said at the plenary session of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
In particular, the Speaker of the Council of the Russian Federation recalled that a number of technical means have been introduced in Russia to improve electoral processes. She also drew attention to the high security of the state automated system "Vybory" and the development of electronic voting in Russia.
Matvienko noted that the current historical period is not easy and is accompanied by the struggle for the formation of a new world order. Against this background, attempts of foreign interference in the will of citizens, and, in fact, attempts on electoral sovereignty are intensifying, the senator added.
The Chairperson of the Federation Council pointed out that the latter notion has not yet been enshrined in the CIS acts. In addition, Matviyenko said it was necessary to create legal mechanisms to protect international observers from prosecution for participation in election monitoring.
Earlier, November 5, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the world was horrified by the election campaign in the United States. According to her, the mutual accusations by the candidates themselves ruled out any external interference.
