The impact of US sanctions on the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project is unacceptable due to its energy importance. This was stated by Yoshimasa Hayashi, Secretary General of the Government of Japan, on November 22.

"We are aware of the sanctions announced by the US against financial institutions, including Gazprombank. According to the US statement, Gazprombank's operations on Sakhalin-2 and Sakhalin Energy are not subject to sanctions. "Thus, we believe that the Sakhalin-2 project will not be affected," he said at the press conference.

Hayashi emphasized that the Japanese government is ready to make "every effort to ensure that there will be no interference in ensuring a stable supply of energy."

Gazprombank came under U.S. sanctions on Nov. 21. Denis Astafiev, founder of the investment company SharesPro, noted that the main blow of the sanctions against Gazprombank will fall on Europe. In addition, the financier pointed out that such US actions are aimed at promoting its liquefied gas to Europe, which will reduce their dependence on Russia.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia would not do charity and supply gas to Austria after non-payment by oil and gas company OMV for the supplied fuel.

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin drew attention to the fact that Russian gas and oil companies feel confident and are developing despite illegal and endless sanctions by Western countries. The President reminded that the fuel and energy complex (FEC) of the Russian Federation is successfully developing a number of large backbone projects.

Against the background of the geopolitical situation and anti-Russian sanctions, some foreign companies announced their withdrawal from joint projects with Russia. On February 28, Royal Dutch Shell announced its intention to stop participating in joint projects with Gazprom, in particular, in Sakhalin-2.
