Fatal accidents involving Tesla electric cars in the United States were twice as many as the national average. This was reported on November 21 by Motor.ru, which studied a report with statistics of deaths in accidents from the government database maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Analysts looked at crashes from 2017 through 2022 involving modern cars that resulted in the death of the driver or passengers. The national average probability of a fatal crash with these inputs was 2.8 per billion vehicle-kilometers.

The Tesla brand had the highest number of fatal crashes in the country: 5.6 per billion vehicle-kilometers. In second place in the anti-rating was Kia with an index of 5.5, the third is Buick (4.8).

At the same time in the model rating the largest number of fatal accidents was recorded in the compact crossover Hyundai Venue, the top five also included Chevrolet Corvette, Mitsubishi Mirage, Porsche 911 and Honda CR-V Hybrid. The Tesla Model Y electric car ended up in the sixth position.

It is assumed that the Tesla Model Y made it to the list of the most dangerous cars because of the high dynamic performance that drivers are not prepared for, as well as the fact that those overly rely on autonomous driving systems. At the same time, the Model Y has a rich array of driver assistants, and this year it received the top Top Safety Pick+ award from the insurance institute IIHS.

On November 13, it was reported that Tesla announced a recall of nearly 2.5 thousand electric Cybertruck pickup trucks due to a dangerous malfunction. The recall is associated with a malfunction of the drive inverter, which can lead to loss of traction and increase the risk of accidents.
