The Seimas (parliament. - Ed.) of Lithuania has approved Gintautas Palutskas, vice chairman of the country's Social Democratic Party, as prime minister. This was reported on November 21 by the Lithuanian radio LRT.

The publication specifies that 88 members of the Seimas voted in favor of his candidacy, 34 were against, and another six abstained. Palutskas will have to present to parliament the cabinet approved by the president and submit the government program for consideration no later than 15 days after his appointment as prime minister.

"I believe that certain pre-election battles were still echoing in our discussions. I hope that soon the echoes of those battles will subside and we will move on to the business agenda," Palutskas said after the vote.

Palutskas was nominated for the post of prime minister by the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, which won the parliamentary elections, and the parties "Democrats in the Name of Lithuania" and "Dawn over Neman".

On October 28, it became known about the victory of the Social Democratic Party. Members of the party received 52 mandates. In total, there are 141 seats in the Seimas.

Elections to the Lithuanian parliament began on October 13. For seats in the government body fought for 14 political parties and the "Peace Coalition". As a result of the elections, 141 members of the parliament of the republic will be elected. The opposition Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) was leading in the Seimas elections in a multi-member district.

Prior to that, on July 12, the Lithuanian government resigned. Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonīte dissolved the government as Gitanas Nauseda was sworn in for a second presidential term.
