The uniqueness of the found mummy of a saber-toothed cat lies in the fact that, according to scientists' assumptions, it is a cub. This was told to "Izvestia" on November 20 by Aysen Klimovsky, a researcher of the department of study of mammoth fauna of the Academy of Sciences of Yakutia.

"Nowhere else has not yet been found such a preservation of homotherium. Remains of the saber-toothed tiger are found all over the world, primarily in North America, in the state of Texas", - he specified.

According to him, scientists from Yakutia and their colleagues from Moscow still have a lot of work to do to study the find.

Klimovsky noted that the mummy was found by local residents in 2020 on the bank of the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in Abyisky ulus. He emphasized that previously only skeletonized remains had been discovered, and this find is the first one that will "reveal a great secret of nature" and find out how saber-toothed tigers actually looked like.

As Klimovsky specified, tentatively, the remains belong to a cub. The mummy has preserved wool, soft tissues, forelimbs, head.

In addition, specified the scientist, the discovery will reveal the possible dispersal of the species Homotherium latidens.

Earlier, on April 17, European and American paleontologists found in the west of England, a fragment of the jaw of a giant ichthyosaur. Its body length could have been more than 25 meters, making it the largest ichthyosaur and marine reptile in Earth's history.
