Five subway stations were closed for several days on the U1 subway line after the fire of a special train without passengers. This was announced on November 20 by the transportation company Wiener Linien, which operates the subway in the Austrian capital.

"Wiener Linien employees are doing everything they can to restore traffic as quickly as possible. Checking systems and repairing faults will take time, so the time to fix the disruption cannot yet be predicted. We anticipate that the U1 section will be closed for a few more days," the company said in a statement on its website.

It added that the fire of the special train, in which there were no passengers, occurred the night before. The cause of the fire is unknown, work is underway to remove the damaged train from the tracks and check the rails, wiring and other elements of the infrastructure of the line. The damaged section of the U1 is located under the center of Vienna, while the northern and southern sections of the line continue to carry passengers. Wiener Linien has asked Vienna residents to use the subway only for necessary trips until the five stations are reopened.

Earlier, on October 31, at Neukölln station in the Berlin subway, an unknown man, running away from police officers, threw his bag. Law enforcers later found explosives in it in a bottle. German sappers had to detonate the dangerous substance in a specially prepared place. The police have started searching for the suspect.
