A Malayan bear cub in the Moscow Zoo is learning to use its claws for stripping bark from trees. This was reported on November 19 by specialists of the institution in the Telegram-channel of the zoo.

The footage published there shows a young female bear tearing the bark of a large stump.

As explained by the head of the department "Mammals" of the Moscow Zoo Mikhail Bragin, this is an important natural skill for this species. It is necessary for Malay bears to search for insects and their nests in logs, trunks and tree stumps.

The red-listed Malay bear cub was brought in late October as part of a conservation program. This is an extremely rare miniature species, representatives of which have not appeared in Russian zoos for more than 30 years. The six-month-old female was placed in the inner enclosure for adaptation.
