A Russian government commission has approved a ban on cryptocurrency mining in a number of regions

The government commission for the development of the electric power industry has approved a ban on cryptocurrency mining in a number of Russian regions from December this year. This was reported to journalists on November 19 by Deputy Energy Minister Yevgeny Grabchak.

"Everything that the Ministry of Energy proposed, everything was supported," he specified.

According to Grabchak, it is still about the already announced list of 13 regions, Moscow was not included in this list. Also, the commission did not consider the issue of covering the projected energy deficit in the Moscow region.

Earlier in the day, the Russian government confirmed plans to introduce a ban on mining in the fall and winter period until 2031 in the Irkutsk region, parts of Buryatia and Trans-Baikal Territory. Similar restrictions are also proposed to be introduced in 10 more regions - in Ingushetia, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachai-Cherkess Republics, Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), as well as in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

Before that, on November 15, with a proposal to ban the work of cryptocurrency miners in some regions from December 2024 was made by the Ministry of Energy. This measure in the Ministry associated in particular with the price of subsidies for electricity during the period of probable shortages.

In addition, on November 11, the government agreed on the taxation of transactions with cryptocurrencies. The press service of the Russian Ministry of Finance told Izvestia that these changes are expected to take effect from 2025.
