- UN General Assembly recognizes CSTO's significant contribution to strengthening security

The UN General Assembly (GA) has adopted a resolution on UN cooperation with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), in which it noted the role of the bloc in strengthening regional security. This is reported on Tuesday, November 19, on the CSTO website.
"The document stresses that the CSTO makes a significant practical contribution to strengthening its peacekeeping potential and the system of regional security and stability, countering terrorism and organized transnational crime, combating illicit trafficking in drugs and weapons, irregular migration and human trafficking, and eliminating the consequences of natural and man-made disasters," the statement said.
The resolution was approved on November 18 at the 79th session of the GA. At the same time, the participants of the meeting also proposed to UN Secretary General António Guterres to continue regular consultations with CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov in bilateral format and within the framework of various forums.
In addition, the two organizations will continue to work together to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and will explore opportunities to enhance cooperation in the field of peacekeeping.
Earlier, November 13, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed with Tasmagambetov, ambassadors and permanent representatives of the organization the multifaceted interaction ahead of the meeting of the CSTO Foreign Ministers' Council to be held in Astana on November 28. At the same time, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met with the head of the bloc. The sides discussed military cooperation within the Organization and prospects for its development.
