The Foreign Ministries of Germany and Finland in a joint statement reported on the investigation into the damage to the communication cable running at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The text was published on the German Foreign Ministry's website on November 18.
"The fact that such an incident immediately raises suspicions of international damage speaks eloquently of the instability of our times. A thorough investigation is underway. <...> Protecting our shared critical infrastructure is vital to our security and the resilience of our societies," the statement said.
Cinia, which is state-owned and also owns the C-Lion1 network to which the damaged cable belongs, also commented on the incident. A statement published on the company's website specified that the causes of the incident are unknown and that repairs will take up to 15 days.
The incident became known earlier in the day. According to the Ilta-Sanomat portal, the C-Lion1 cable was put into operation in 2016. Its length is almost 1.2 thousand km, and its depth is about a meter. The cable runs next to the gas pipeline.
In addition, on the same day, Andrius Šemeškevičius, technology director of the telecommunications company Telia Lietuva, said that Lithuania had recorded the breakage of an underwater communication cable to Sweden. This cable was also laid on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. He emphasized that the damaged cable was quite old and had already had several accidents. No cases of sabotage have been recorded.
