A communication cable laid on the bottom of the Baltic Sea was broken between Lithuania and Sweden. This was reported on Monday, November 18, by Andrius Šemeškevičius, the technology director of the telecommunications company Telia Lietuva.

"The cable was cut on Sunday morning, around 10 a.m. Lithuanian time (11:00 Moscow time - Ed.). The systems immediately reported that we had lost communication. Investigation and clarification continued and it became clear that it had been broken," LRT radio quoted him as saying.

Communication with Sweden is provided through three cables, and due to the incident, access to Internet resources decreased by a third. Šemeškevičius emphasized that the damaged cable is quite old and there have already been several accidents with it. No cases of sabotage have been recorded.

"These failures are usually related to shipping, when somewhere in shallow waters, near the coast some ship, having incorrectly set the anchor, can snag the cable and break it," the company director explained.

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that the C-Lion1 telecommunications cable running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany was also severed. Cinia, a fiber optic network construction company, told media that the cable had been cut. It was specified that the customers were informed and the repair has been started. According to the portal, the C-Lion1 cable was put into operation in 2016. Its length is almost 1.2 thousand km, and its depth is about a meter. The cable runs next to the gas pipeline.

On the same day Germany and Finland said they were concerned about damage to an undersea communication cable running between the two countries in the Baltic Sea, a report card investigation is underway, the parties said in a joint statement, as reported by German newspaper Handelsblatt.
