WP reported diabetes in nearly 16% of U.S. residents

About 15.8% of people in the United States have diabetes, and a quarter of them do not know they have the disease. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on Monday, November 18.
According to the newspaper, from August 2021 to August 2023, 11.3% of U.S. residents were diagnosed with diabetes, and 4.5% of citizens have undiagnosed diabetes. It is noted that those who did not know about their diagnosis were most often the elderly and overweight people.
It is also clarified that diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the country, especially when patients are often unaware that they have the chronic disease. Prolonged neglect of high blood glucose levels can significantly undermine health by negatively affecting the nervous system, kidneys, vision, cardiovascular system and blood vessels.
On the same day, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that Russian regions will receive about 5.5 billion rubles in additional funding to fully implement all planned measures of the federal program to combat diabetes.
According to him, the program was launched on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Its tasks include early diagnosis of the disease, guaranteed provision of materials and medicines to citizens. He added that the state also has resources for the modernization of medical organizations that help residents of rural areas and remote territories.
