European Union (EU) diplomatic chief Josep Borrell admitted on 18 November that he was unable to unblock arms supplies to Ukraine through the European Peace Facility.

"Unfortunately, I will probably no longer be able to make a final offer on the European Peace Facility," he told reporters upon his arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

He had earlier made promises that by the end of his mandate he would be able to unblock more than €5 billion worth of arms shipments through the European Peace Fund, which Hungary has continued to block for more than a year.

On December 1, Borrell's term as EU diplomacy chief will expire, and he will be succeeded by former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. On November 1, she began working as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Earlier, on November 13, Borrell called on the EU to increase support for Ukraine after the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential election. Then he noted that at the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on November 18 will discuss the prospects of US support for Kiev.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine amid Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which began on February 24, 2022. The decision to hold it was taken by the Russian president because of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to the increased shelling by Ukrainian troops.
