German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confidently said that Olaf Scholz will be nominated as a candidate for chancellor in early elections from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The German news service Tagesschau stated on November 17.

"We have a candidate for chancellor, I strongly assume that Olaf Scholz will be nominated," Pistorius reported.

The SPD will decide on the choice of candidate at the party conference no later than January 11.

"It is about achieving a good result in the new elections. We will not achieve that if we discuss a candidate for the chancellor's office," Pistorius explained.

Earlier, on November 11, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius admitted the likelihood of negotiations between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russia on the settlement of the armed conflict in Ukraine.

On November 8, historian, political scientist and Germanist Yevgeniya Pimenova, PhD in history, said that the most likely candidate to replace Olaf Scholz as German chancellor is the head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz.
