Israeli intelligence services are verifying information about the possible liquidation of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement Yahya Sinwar as a result of strikes by the country's Defense Forces (IDF) on the Gaza Strip. This was reported by state-run Kan radio on Sunday, September 22.

"There is no credible intelligence confirming this information, and therefore there is disagreement over whether the Hamas leader was actually eliminated or whether he went into hiding," the radio station said in its piece.

For its part, The Jerusalem Post reported that the IDF could neither confirm nor deny reports of Sinwar's possible death.

Back in November last year, it was reported that Sinwar is one of the main organizers of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Yahya Sinwar became head of the Hamas politburo in early August following the death of Ismail Haniyeh.

On July 31, a strike on the Hamas leader 's residence in Tehran killed Haniyeh and his bodyguard. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) indicated that the causes of the incident were being investigated.

On August 5, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said that all evidence points to Israel being behind Haniyeh's death in a strike on Tehran. He emphasized that Iran has the right to act in such a way to "punish the aggressor."

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas launched a massive rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, as well as invaded border areas in the south of the country and took hostages. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
