In the middle of summer, Russia celebrates the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, which coincides with the day of remembrance of the patron saints of the family — Peter and Fevronia of Murom. Family, Love and Fidelity Day: postcards and pictures

The history of the holiday is connected with the legend of Peter and Fevronia, who lived at the turn of the XII–XIII centuries in the city of Murom, which became the eastern outpost of medieval Russia. Peter was the younger brother of Prince Pavel of Murom. One day, the devil got into the habit of going to his wife, each time taking the form of Paul. Peter was able to recognize the devil and struck him down with a sword. Dying, the tempting serpent sprayed Peter with blood, which caused his entire body to be covered with sores.

Only the daughter of a beekeeper, Fevronia, from the neighboring Ryazan region, who later became Peter's wife, was able to cure him. After his brother's death, Peter ascended the princely throne. But soon the young couple were forced to leave Murom, as the boyars did not accept the commoner. After their departure, the city was in turmoil. Then the Muromites asked Peter and Fevronia to return to rule over them again.

After returning to Murom, the couple lived here for the rest of their lives, becoming a model of a Christian family. At an advanced age, they entered a monastery, dying on the same day and hour.

Legends about the princely couple have been rumored among the people since the end of the XII century. Later, the church writer Ermolai wrote "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom", the lists of which were distributed in different cities. More than 300 of them have survived to the present day.

When the question of who to choose as a symbol of matrimony was discussed, the choice fell on Peter and Fevronia. The tradition of celebrating a holiday in their honor appeared back in the 1990s in Murom, where the relics of the saints are kept. Since 2008, it has been celebrated as a Day of Family, Love and Fidelity throughout Russia. And since June 2022, by presidential decree, the holiday has become official.

Every year, Family Day is becoming more popular among Russians. On this day, couples who have been married for at least 25 years are honored throughout the country. They are awarded medals "For love and loyalty." On the holiday, many unmarried girls receive marriage proposals, and lovers planning to start a family tend to marry on July 8.

Traditionally, white daisies are given on Family Day. This is the main attribute of the celebration, which has long been considered a symbol of love. And, of course, as on other significant dates, it is customary to exchange postcards and warm greetings with loved ones.

Since July 8 is a big family holiday that unites different generations, family photos, white swans, daisies, as well as iconic images of Peter and Fevronia are often chosen as the subject for greeting cards.
