Happy Peter and Fevronia Day: the most beautiful postcards, Orthodox greetings

Every year on July 8, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the blessed Peter and Fevronia of Murom, whose life is considered an example of Christian matrimony. Saints have been revered since ancient times as patrons of marriage and the family hearth. Izvestia has prepared postcards and touching greetings for their memorial day.

The love story of the holy spouses was described in the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom" by the famous church writer of the XVI century Ermolai-Erasmus. It was based on oral folk tales. The unusual plot, full of miracles and romantic moments, distinguished the work from the traditional lives of saints, making it a truly national treasure.
According to legend, Murom was once ruled by a prince named Pavel. One day, trouble befell him — a snake began to come to his wife in the guise of the prince himself. No one could find a way to defeat him until the princess learned the secret: the monster can only be destroyed with the help of the "Peter's Shoulder" and the "Agrikov sword".
Pavel's brother, Prince Peter, became the savior from adversity. He managed to find a magic sword and killed the snake, but he himself contracted leprosy from its poisonous blood. Neither medicines nor folk remedies helped him get rid of the disease, and then he went to the Ryazan lands in search of a skilled healer.
In the village of Laskovo, Peter found a girl named Fevronia, the daughter of a simple collector of wild honey. She promised to cure the prince if he would marry her. Peter agreed and was cured of his illness, but he did not keep his word, buying off with gifts. After returning to Murom, he was covered with ulcers again and had to turn to the healer for help again. This time, the prince fulfilled his promise and took Fevronia as his wife.
After Paul's death, Peter ascended the throne. The boyars were unhappy that he had married a commoner by his choice, but they could not force the prince to part with his beloved. Then they expelled the spouses from their native lands. However, soon unrest began in Murom, the people began to ask for the return of the ruler and his wife, and the disgraced boyars were forced to call their sovereign back.
For many years, Peter and Fevronia wisely ruled the country. Shortly before his death, the couple took monastic vows and retired to different monasteries. Before they died, they bequeathed them to be buried together — in one coffin with a thin partition. But the monks decided to bury them separately, according to the rules of the monasteries. However, the next morning, the saints were together again — their bodies were found together, which became evidence of their holy love and fidelity to each other.
Peter and Fevronia were separated again, but the miracle happened again. After that, the monks no longer dared to disregard the last will of the saints and buried them in the same coffin. The Orthodox Church canonized the Prince and Princess of Murom in the 16th century. Now their relics are in the Holy Trinity Monastery of Murom.
On Peter and Fevronia Day, festive divine services are held in Orthodox churches. Believers pray to the saints for family well-being, getting rid of illnesses, the birth of children, and the health of loved ones.
Couples planning a wedding come to the Murom Holy Trinity Monastery to ask the priest for the blessing of marriage. Peter and Fevronia Day is also considered successful for concluding a civil union at the registry office. However, the wedding does not take place on the holiday, as it falls on St. Peter's Fast, during which the celebration of this sacrament is prohibited.
After the service, many believers arrange a modest feast in the family circle. A traditional holiday treat is considered to be a lean pie, which is divided among the household in order to attract happiness and well-being into the house. Some people prefer to just spend time with their spouses and children in parks, outdoors or in the city.
A secular holiday, Family, Love and Fidelity Day, is also timed to coincide with Saints' Day in Russia. Unofficially, it has been celebrated since 2008, and in 2022, by presidential decree, the celebration received state status.
Concerts, family contests, flash mobs and promotions are held in many Russian cities in honor of the holiday. It is celebrated on the largest scale in Murom, the birthplace of the blessed Prince Peter. Fairs, festival and reenactment sites, exhibitions and lecture halls are unfolding on the streets of the city.
