On July 4, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Julian of Tarsus, who lived in Asia Minor at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth centuries. In the national calendar, the holiday is known as Ulyanovsk Day. It has long been considered magical and is associated with all kinds of rituals that help strengthen family and love bonds. Read about how the holiday was celebrated in the old days, what traditions and signs are associated with it, in the Izvestia material.

What holiday is celebrated today, July 4th

It is known about the Great Martyr that he was born in the Asia Minor province of Cilicia (the territory of the southeastern coast of Turkey) into a wealthy family. His father was a pagan, and his mother was an Orthodox Christian. Thanks to her, Julian joined religion early and was baptized after his father's death.

The saint's youth fell during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian, during which the persecution of Christians began. Together with other believers, Julian was captured and put in prison. However, despite his still young age, the confessor refused to renounce Christ, remaining steadfast in his firm faith. As a punishment, he was put in a bag of snakes and thrown into the sea.

A few days later, the martyr's body washed ashore near Alexandria, where it was found and buried by a pious Christian woman. Later, the relics of the saint were transferred to the city of Antioch. Miracles were performed next to them and people were cured of diseases.

With the adoption of Christianity, the holy martyr began to be revered in Russia. On memorial Day, believers went to church to pray to the saint. The prayers of Julian of Tarsus help in strengthening the Christian faith, overcoming trials and strengthening family relationships.

An important part of the holiday was cosmetic procedures: to preserve beauty and youth, medicinal infusions of lime blossoms, which bloomed in the height of summer, were prepared.
