The national Christian holiday of the Sign of Timothy is celebrated annually on June 23. On this day, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the Holy Martyr Timothy of Prussia, Bishop. Since various natural phenomena often occurred during this period, the people regarded them as an omen and turned to the saint for protection and patronage. Read about the traditions and signs associated with the festive date in the Izvestia article.

What is the holiday today, June 23rd

The Holy Martyr Timothy lived in the IV century and held the post of bishop in the ancient city of Prusa (the city of Brusa in modern Turkey). He actively preached Christianity among urban residents and converted many pagans to Christ. For his dedication and perseverance, he was rewarded by the Lord with the gift of healing and miracle-working.

The saint's life fell during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate, a former Christian who returned to pagan cults. During this period, by decree of the emperor, the teaching of Christianity was banned in schools, which marked the beginning of a new wave of persecution and repression against believers.

Despite the threats and dangers, Timothy remained faithful to Christ, continuing to preach the gospel and heal the sick. He was revered as a saint for his courage and spiritual strength. Even when he was imprisoned, the townspeople came to the dungeon to hear his instructions. Upon learning of this, Julian the Apostate ordered the bishop's execution.

Later, the church established a memorial day for the saint. The memorable date is celebrated on June 23 (June 10, old style). In the folk tradition, the holiday is known by the names: Signs of Timothy, Timothy and Timothy's Day.

Folk signs of June 23

In the old days, special importance was attached to natural signs and signs of fate. Our ancestors believed that God sent signs to Timothy to help predict the future. Therefore, they carefully observed everything around them: the trees, the clouds, the sound of rain, the behavior of animals and birds. Even the rustle of the grass on this day could have a prophetic meaning.

Bad omens included a fiery glow in the sky, mice running across the threshing floor, flocks of ravens flying from the forest, and wolves roaming the field. These signs were considered dangerous — they foreshadowed famine, disease, pestilence of livestock and other disasters.

It was also believed that evil spirits were activated on the holiday. To protect themselves from them and avoid misfortunes, people tried not to leave their homes unnecessarily. A bath with medicinal herbs was considered the best protection against evil spirits — it helped to purify oneself and strengthen one's health in the face of possible disasters.

Wormwood, fern, or chamomile were often added to the hot water. Magical properties were attributed to these plants in Russia. The people believed that they helped not only to protect themselves from evil, but also to strengthen the body and spirit.

The Signs of Timothy in 2025: what can and cannot be done

According to beliefs, you can not stay alone on Timothy's Day, otherwise this condition will drag on for a long time. While in the dwelling, it is necessary to close the windows and lock the shutters so that there is always prosperity and well-being in the house.

It was also forbidden to touch mirrors and moles on the body — misfortune could happen. In addition, they were afraid to leave spoons and dishes on the table during the holiday. After the meal, the leftovers and utensils were removed. The uncleaned dishes promised a lean year.

A day earlier, Cyril's Day was celebrated in Russia. Izvestia told about the history, traditions and prohibitions of this day.
