Ecologist's Day is celebrated annually on June 5th. In 2025, it falls on a Thursday.

Ecologist's Day was established by presidential decree in 2007 on the initiative of the Ecology Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation. For the first time, the holiday was celebrated in Russia a year later on World Environment Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1972.

The date of the celebration was chosen as the day of the start of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. As a result of this international event, an important document was adopted — the Stockholm Declaration, which consolidated the basic principles of environmental conservation and initiated the targeted development of initiatives to address environmental issues at the global level.

Thus, a number of actions and events calling for the protection of the natural environment are taking place simultaneously in Russia and around the world.

Traditions and interesting facts about Ecologist's Day

On this day, all kinds of actions, cleaning of territories, excursions to nature reserves and national parks, scientific conferences and much more are held throughout the country.

For example, the international Ecology Forum is timed to coincide with the holiday in Moscow. This year it will be held for the 16th time. The event will discuss issues in five thematic areas: industry as a driver, nature as a value, man as a foundation, technology as a mechanism, and environmental intelligence.

Major educational events are also held in honor of the holiday, such as the Nevsky International Environmental Congress in St. Petersburg or the All-Russian Conference on Environmental Education. At these venues, environmentalists, activists, private companies and educational organizations share their experience in nature conservation and present new projects.

The right of citizens to a favorable environment is enshrined in the constitutions of many countries, including Russia (art. 42). At the same time, according to a survey by the NAFI analytical center, only 39% of Russians are satisfied with the environmental situation in their region. One in four Russian residents is dissatisfied with the state of the environment in their place of residence.

The main environmental problems today are industrial and transport pollution of the atmosphere, which poses a great danger to both nature and humans. Harmful emissions destroy the ozone layer, accelerate global warming and cause a number of dangerous diseases.

To ensure the environmental safety of the country, the Ecology national project was launched in 2019, thanks to which it was planned to achieve a significant breakthrough in this area. The Year of Ecology in Russia, announced in 2017, also contributed to this goal.

In addition, government support is provided to environmentalists. Since 1996, employees of environmental organizations and departments have been awarded the title of Honored Ecologist of Russia. The Badge of distinction is awarded for advanced developments and the introduction of modern technologies to protect the environment.
