May 25 — Philologist's Day: beautiful postcards and greetings

At the end of May, Russia celebrates Philologist's Day, a professional holiday for specialists who study the culture of different nations, expressed in language and literary creativity. Izvestia tells about the history of the holiday and who to congratulate on this date.
Philologist's Day in 2025: date, history of the holiday
Philologist's Day is celebrated annually on May 25. In 2025, it falls on a Sunday.
Philology means "love of the word" in Greek. Science has its roots deep in antiquity. The first attempts to describe the features of the language were made in India and Ancient Greece. The final formation of philology as a science took place in Europe at the turn of the XVII–XVIII centuries.
In Russia, its development was promoted by the outstanding Russian scientist and thinker Mikhail Lomonosov. He also laid the foundations of the teaching of the Russian language. It is not surprising that for the first time the Philologist's Day was held at Moscow State University (MSU), which bears his name. The holiday was held on May 25, 1989, on the initiative of university teachers and students on the day of the end of the academic year.
The tradition took root, and soon the holiday became popular throughout the academic community. For more than 30 years, it has been celebrated on the same date, the day after the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, approved in honor of the creators of the Slavic alphabet Cyril and Methodius. The holiday is also celebrated in Belarus, Ukraine and other republics of the former USSR.
Philologist's Day: about the profession
Perhaps no other discipline teaches such careful and reverent attitude to vocabulary as philology. And if a doctor knows everything about the structure of the human body, then a philologist is well versed in the structure of any text. Moreover, such specialists are well versed both in the culture of their state and in the language and literature of other countries.
You can get this knowledge at the philological faculties of higher educational institutions. The main subjects there are the history and theory of folklore, linguistics, rhetoric, dialectology and foreign languages. During their studies, future philologists study the nature of language, as well as learn how to work with texts, including ancient ones.
The profession allows graduates to get jobs as teachers of Russian language and literature, researchers, editors, journalists, and translators. Philologists are also in demand in other fields, as competent and beautiful speech is needed everywhere.
Happy Philologist's Day: greetings and postcards
On Philologist's Day, students, teachers and graduates of specialized fields receive congratulations. On this day, universities organize festive concerts, informal gatherings and skits. At work and at home, philologists are congratulated by their colleagues and relatives.
Choosing a gift for the culprits of the celebration is not so difficult. After all, they spend most of their time reading. Souvenirs with quotations from great classics, rare or rare books, exclusive writing sets, vintage lamps and cozy blankets are suitable as a gift.
