Every year, Russia celebrates Daughter's Day, an unofficial holiday dedicated to all girls and women. For many parents, this is a good reason to spend time with their daughters, to please them with gifts and warm words. Izvestia has prepared postcards and heartfelt congratulations for this family celebration.

When is Daughter's Day celebrated in 2025

Holidays in honor of daughters are celebrated in many countries of the world, but they fall on different dates. In Russia, parents congratulate their daughters on April 25. In the USA, National Daughter's Day is celebrated on September 25, and in India — on the fourth Sunday of September.

In Japan, Hinamatsuri is celebrated on March 3 — the Holiday of girls, or the Holiday of Dolls. On this day, families with their daughters decorate the house and put dolls called "hina-ningyo" on a special stand. It is believed that they protect the culprits of the celebration from sorrows and diseases. The girls put on beautiful kimonos and go to visit their friends or relatives to spend time together and enjoy traditional sweets. At the same time, it is important to follow etiquette and behave appropriately, since one of the main meanings of the holiday is the education of the younger generation.

On a global level, Daughter's Day is not celebrated. The closest date in terms of meaning can be considered October 11 — International Girls' Day. The holiday was established by the United Nations in 2011.

It is impossible to accurately determine the origin of the Daughters' Day. According to one version, India became the first country where they started congratulating girls. The initiative belonged to a local postcard brand. Thus, the organizers sought not only to please the culprits of the celebration, but also to draw public attention to the problems of gender inequality in the country.

According to another theory, the holiday originated as a continuation of the American campaign "Let's take our daughters to work," which appeared at the end of the last century. It was held in order to introduce girls to different professions and establish gender equality in the country. The fact is that until the 1960s, in the United States, women mostly served as "keepers of the hearth": they cooked, cleaned, raised children, etc. Building a career and providing for a family was considered an exclusively male task.

Over time, the gender differences smoothed out and the campaign transformed into the "Daughters and Sons Labor Day" — a kind of career guidance for children. And Daughters' Day began to be celebrated separately at the end of September.

The first mentions of Daughter's Day in Russia date back to 2017. However, it is impossible to say exactly how it originated and why it is celebrated on April 25. The holiday is not an official one, but every year more and more people celebrate it.

On this day, parents tend to spend time with their daughters. Many families celebrate at home, having a feast with the girls' favorite dishes, looking at photo albums and telling stories from the childhood of their mothers, grandmothers and other relatives. Some mothers take their daughters to shopping malls and beauty salons to treat themselves to new clothes, hairstyles, and manicures. Sometimes active games or quests with puzzles are arranged for girls.
