How to become an astronaut
Conquering space is the dream of many Soviet and Russian children. Since 2012, Roscosmos and the Cosmonaut Training Center have been conducting open recruitment for cosmonaut squads, so everyone who meets the requirements has a chance to fulfill this dream.:
- under 35 years of age;
- legal capacity;
- lack of foreign citizenship or residence permit in other countries;
- absence of outstanding criminal records and cases of violation of the law on the protection of state secrets;
- higher education in an engineering or flight specialty, as well as at least three years of professional experience;
- height from 150 to 190 cm, body weight 50-90 kg;
- good health, psychological stability;
- English language proficiency at the graduate level of a non-linguistic university.
To participate in the selection, you need to collect the documents from the list and send them to the admissions committee of the Cosmonaut Training Center. Then the candidate for space exploration will need to take entrance exams and undergo a medical examination. After that, the candidate will undergo general training for two years, following which he will have to pass the state exam for the title of test cosmonaut.
In the next two years, the examiner will undergo intensive training in groups, take additional tests and credits (about 150 pieces). If everything goes well and he is assigned to the crew, it will take another 18-24 months to prepare for the first flight.
Cosmonautics Day events in 2025
Themed events will be held throughout the country on Cosmonautics Day.: exhibitions, festivals, competitions, concerts, lectures, interactive classes, workshops and much more. Special events are held on the International Space Station (ISS) in honor of Cosmonautics Day. The crew members receive congratulations and send messages to Earth.
Congratulations are also addressed to those astronauts who are just preparing for flights or have already left the service. Awards for outstanding achievements are often presented on the day of the holiday.
The holiday will be celebrated on a special scale in Moscow. So, on April 12, at the VDNH Cosmonautics and Aviation Center, they will be able to watch live a recording of the Soyuz MS-27 takeoff with expert comments. The All-Russian Space dictation, which will be conducted by Hero of Russia cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, will also take place on the same site. VDNKH guests will be able to visit 10 more thematic venues, listen to lectures on the history of the exploration of the universe and watch films about the planets closest to Earth.
Cosmonautics Day will also be celebrated in some metropolitan libraries. Classes and workshops for children and teenagers will be held there.
Interesting facts about Cosmonautics Day
In honor of the holiday, Izvestia collected interesting facts about Cosmonautics Day.
Every year, cosmonaut German Titov, Yuri Gagarin's understudy, proposed celebrating the day of the first human spaceflight. The idea was supported by the Soviet leadership, and already in 1968 the holiday became international.
Gagarin spent 1 hour and 48 minutes aboard the Vostok spacecraft. During this time, he circled the planet once and landed safely. However, in reality, everything was far from smooth. Even before takeoff, a malfunction was discovered on the ship — one of the hatches was not airtight. But we managed to fix this problem quickly enough. Gagarin had problems during landing: due to a delay in the air supply to the spacesuit, the cosmonaut almost suffocated, and then narrowly avoided landing in the Volga.
There is a night version of Cosmonautics Day — St. George's Night. This is an international holiday. the main purpose of which is to increase people's interest in space exploration. It was first held in 2001 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first space flight. The guests of the celebration were famous personalities such as science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, space tourist Dennis Tito, and Nichelle Nichols, an actress of the Star Trek television series.
