The Virgin Mary was the only and long-awaited daughter of the righteous Anna and Joseph. The couple could not conceive a child for a long time, which was considered a great sin in Jewish society. Grieving for their fate, they prayed incessantly and promised to dedicate their firstborn to God. As a result, their prayers were answered, and Mary was born. Until the age of 14, she was raised in a temple among pious girls and women, studying the Holy Scriptures, devoting time to work and prayer.
When Mary reached marriageable age, the clergy informed her that it was time for her to leave the temple and find a spouse, as required by Jewish law. However, the girl replied that she had decided to dedicate her life to the Lord and had taken a vow of celibacy. Then the high priest Zachariah suggested that she get engaged to the righteous elder Joseph in order to formally observe the tradition, but not to break the oath given to God. The Holy Virgin was satisfied with this decision, and soon she left with her husband for Nazareth.
According to the Gospel of Luke, a few months after the wedding ceremony, the archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary. He greeted the girl with the words "Hail, Gracious One!" and informed her that she had been chosen to become the mother of the Son of God. Mary was confused and asked the heavenly messenger how this was possible, because she "did not know her husband." After receiving the explanation, the Holy Virgin uttered the cherished words: "Let it be done to me according to Your word."
According to theologians, it was Mary's consent that played a key role in this event. The possibility of the Savior's birth completely depended on whether the holy Virgin accepted the role reserved for her, because God's Incarnation would have been impossible without the participation of free human will.

During the Annunciation, all mankind received the good news together with Mary. It consisted in the fact that there was a Virgin among people who was ready to humbly and fearlessly transfer her fate into the hands of God, thereby opening the way for the incarnation of the Son of God.

The hope for eternal life that the Mother of God has given to all people is so all-encompassing that it cannot but cause delight.
