In Russia and other countries of the world, International Internet Day is celebrated on April 4. The celebrations take place on St. Isidore of Seville Memorial Day, which is considered the patron saint of the Network. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Friday. Izvestia tells about how the holiday appeared and what traditions are associated with it.

Traditions for Internet Day on April 4th

The initiative to establish the celebration belongs to the Catholic Church. Believers on this date remember Saint Isidore, a medieval scientist and theologian. He became the creator of the first-ever encyclopedia of "Etymology" in 20 volumes, which provides an interpretation of all things and phenomena existing in the world.

The Church has recognized the World Wide Web as a treasure trove of knowledge accumulated by mankind. When the question of who to choose as the patron saint of the Internet was discussed, users voted for Isidore of Seville, who had previously been recognized as the patron saint of pupils and students.

In 2003, Pope John Paul II officially approved the decision, and April 4 became International Internet Day. Some users find the date of the holiday symbolic, as the numbers 4.04 resemble the error 404 ("Page not found"), which is known to all users.

This event has completely changed people's lives. Today, the total number of Internet users is more than 5 billion people, almost 70% of the world's population. They search the Internet for the necessary information, get to know each other, study, watch movies, listen to music and make purchases. According to the annual report of the Datareportal service, on average, users spend about 7 hours a day online using a computer or mobile devices.

Soon after the advent of the Internet, a number of countries began talking about the problem of Internet addiction. There is even a separate date in the calendar of holidays — the International Day without the Internet. Every year, on the last Sunday of January, users are encouraged to live in the real world for at least one day a year, putting aside all gadgets.

Earlier, Izvestia wrote that Russia has its own Internet Day. It is celebrated on September 30, the day when the first census of Runet users was conducted. At that time, about a million Russians used the Internet.
