In many Muslim countries, such as Turkey, the end of Ramadan is celebrated for three days. This is one of the most ancient Muslim holidays. According to legend, it was established by the Prophet Muhammad himself in 624. What can and cannot be done on the holy holiday of Eid al-Adha is in the material of Izvestia.

Eid al-Adha: What kind of holiday is it when the beginning and the end are in 2025

Ramadan is a holy month for all Muslims, during which people who profess Islam keep a strict fast: they have breakfast before the first rays of the sun, and have dinner only after sunset. The holy month ends with the Eid al-Adha holiday, one of the most ancient in Islam. The tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad. According to legend, the prophet established the celebration of Eid al-Adha in 624. The holiday has spread along with the Muslim religion since the time of the Arab Caliphate.

The Muslim calendar is based on the lunar calendar, so the date of the beginning and end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha depends on the phases of the Moon. In some Muslim countries, the first day of fasting is determined by astronomical calculations, in others by observing the Earth's satellite or the testimony of theologians, so the dates of the beginning of the holy month may vary from country to country.

In 2025, the holy Muslim month of Ramadan began on February 28. On the night of March 30, believers will celebrate the end of the month of abstinence — the feast of Eid al-Adha.

In Arabic, Eid al-Fitr is called Eid al-Fitr, which literally means "the feast of the cessation of fasting." The Turkic name of the holiday comes from the Persian word "ruza", which means fasting, as well as from the Turkish word "bayram", which translates as "holiday". For Muslims, Eid al-Adha is a symbol of rebirth and purification from evil desires in order to perform only actions pleasing to Allah in the future.

What can and cannot be done on the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha

A few days before Eid al-Adha, Muslims clean houses, buy new interior elements, and sometimes even completely renovate the furniture in the house. All believers traditionally congratulate their relatives and friends on the end of the fast and give alms to those in need (money or food). Festive dishes are prepared in honor of Eid al-Adha, excluding prohibited foods such as pork and alcohol. Manti, sujuk, belyashi, beshbarmak, pilaf, baklava and dried fruits are popular among the festive dishes.

Gifts are an important part of the holiday. Most often, they give a beautifully bound Koran, religious objects, dishes, sweets and home decor. The whole family and close people gather at the festive table, sometimes even the neighbors are called. When people meet in the Arab world, they tell each other: "Eid Mubarak", which means "blessed holiday", and in Tatar this greeting sounds like "Eid gaete mubarak bulsyn".

On a holiday, people wake up very early, before dawn. Before going to the mosque, complete ablution is performed.

The clothes for the holiday should be new, clean and elegant. Celebrating the holiday often begins immediately after sunset, at nightfall. It is believed that the Prophet Muhammad advised to spend the night on Eid al-Adha for prayers. It is not considered mandatory, but many Muslims follow his instructions.

The advent of Eid al-Adha allows believers to lead a normal life again: eat and drink during the daytime, smoke and have sex. However, it remains forbidden for believers to think about bad things, gossip, quarrel and swear. On the day of the holiday, you should not engage in physical labor and do household chores, the exception is cooking for the festive table.

During Eid al-Adha, believers visit the graves of deceased relatives and read chapters of the Quran — surahs there.

"Eid al—Adha is the best reason to start a new life and an opportunity to preserve the spiritual purity and high degree of piety that people have acquired during the blessed month of Ramadan," explained Tatarstan Mufti Kamil Samigullin earlier.

Eid al-Adha: day off 2025

In Russia, the Thanksgiving holiday will begin at sunset, on the night of March 30th. In 2025, Eid al-Adha fell on a Sunday, a non—working day.

In some regions of Russia, not only the day of the holiday will be closed, but also those closest to it. So, in Bashkiria, weekends will be on March 29, 30 and 31, and in Chechnya and Adygea — on March 30, 31 and April 1. In Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia, Monday, March 31, will be closed. In Tatarstan, Ramadan will be celebrated only on March 30.
