On March 22, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of 40 Sebaste martyrs, soldiers who chose to go through suffering and torture, but did not betray their faith. Their history is full of courage, and for believers, the saints have become a symbol of dedication and steadfastness in the struggle for their principles. Izvestia introduces readers to the history of the holiday, its meaning and traditions.

Commemoration Day of the 40 Sevastian Martyrs – 2025: history

The history of the 40 Sebaste martyrs dates back to the third century and is associated with the period of persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. At that time, the throne belonged to Emperor Constantine the Great, who legalized Christianity. But idolatry still flourished in various parts of the country, and followers of the true faith faced severe punishments, including even death.

For example, General Agricolai served in the city of Sebaste (now Sivas, Turkey), who called on his soldiers to renounce the faith, sacrifice to pagan idols, and even participate in the persecution of Christians.

However, Christians loyal to their beliefs met in the ranks of the soldiers under the command of the general. These 40 people refused to renounce Christ, and when the general passed sentence, they had to be subjected to severe trials in order to force them to renounce the faith.

At first, the soldiers were thrown into dungeons without water or drink. But despite their physical weakness and exhaustion, the martyrs did not abandon their faith and continued to pray. One day, the prisoners heard a voice that promised them, "Whoever endures to the end will be saved."

Realizing that imprisonment was powerless, Agricolai decided to subject the believers to even more sophisticated torture. The rioters were stripped, taken to the lake in the bitter cold and put in the water. A sauna was deliberately melted on the shore, testing their patience.

One of the soldiers gave up and ran to warm up, but fell dead as soon as he reached the steam room doors. The rest of the warriors continued to hold on. Soon there were 40 martyrs again, and one of the guards joined them.

Agricolaus became enraged and ordered the Christians to be beaten to death. But even when dying, the saints did not cease to praise Christ. Their bodies were set on fire, and their bones were first thrown into the river.

Later, the city bishop had a vision. Forty fallen warriors came to him and asked him to get their remains out of the water. The priest complied with their request.

The martyrs were canonized. Their steadfastness and courage during the persecution turned them into a symbol of faith and fidelity to Christ.

Traditions for the Commemoration Day of the 40 Sevastian Martyrs

Many believers visit temples on the day of the feast and offer prayers to the saints. Christians glorify the feat of the martyrs, asking them for intercession and support in their faith.

Special divine services, including prayer services and memorial services, are also held on the significant date. They remind believers of the courage of the martyrs, their devotion and true faith in Christ.

It is a common tradition to participate in charity events and help the poor and needy. On this day, believers try to provide assistance to those who need support and financial assistance.

The lark is popularly considered the symbol of the holiday. Since ancient times, there has been a tradition to bake these birds from dough, treat children and neighbors, and also feed the birds themselves with muffins.

Earlier, Izvestia told readers about the history and traditions of the national holiday Constantine's Day.
