Forgiveness Sunday falls on the last Sunday before Lent. In the Orthodox tradition, this day has a special meaning, when everyone should reflect on their actions and ask for forgiveness from their neighbors for mistakes and offenses. In 2025, Forgiveness Sunday falls on March 2. Izvestia has prepared beautiful postcards and pictures for this date.

Postcards for Forgiven Sunday 2025

The Day of the Forgiven Sunday is truly unique. It is located at the junction of the riotous Carnival and the strict Great Lent, when the time comes for repentance before God.

The holiday has its roots in ancient times. In past times, monks, retreating to the desert for a long time for prayer solitude, asked each other in advance for forgiveness. Survival conditions in the desert were harsh, and it was never known in advance whether they would be able to return to the monastery alive by Easter.

With the adoption of Christianity, the tradition of asking each other for forgiveness before starting a fast was adopted in Russia. They usually say on a holiday: "Forgive me, please!" They say in response.: "God forgive me! And I forgive!" The meaning of these words is that a person can only repent of his sins and forget about insults, but only God can forgive sins.

Another meaning lies in the fact that in order to be forgiven by God, you must learn to forgive yourself. There are such lines in the Bible about this: "And I say to you that you must forgive one another, for whoever does not forgive his brother his trespasses will stand condemned before the Lord."

Thus, Forgiven Sunday is a day when, without hurting our dignity and self—esteem, we can ask for forgiveness from those whom we have offended, willingly or unwittingly, and forgive the offenders ourselves. In this way, the holiday teaches us patience, compassion and mercy in dealing with loved ones. In addition, by forgiving and being forgiven, a person finds peace of mind and harmony.

Apart from the religious significance, it can be noted that the traditions of the holiday carry universal values. They are related to the need to speak out, let go of grievances and resolve differences in a civilized way.

Friends and relatives are asked to apologize for both bad deeds and words. After all, nothing hurts as painfully and accurately as insulting words uttered in anger. They can stay in the memory for a long time and ruin even the strongest relationships. But to get forgiveness, it's not enough to just say "I'm sorry!"

Representatives of the church note that this word has become commonplace and, as a rule, it is not given much importance. Saying it just to follow the tradition, a person does not feel sincere guilt for his actions, and therefore will not be able to achieve forgiveness.

Before you apologize to a person, you should analyze your actions and ask for forgiveness for specific offenses. For example, to say, "I want to apologize for not keeping my word and letting you down. I realized my mistake. I'm sorry, please!" or "I'm sorry for saying rude things to you when I was in a bad mood. I sincerely apologize for that."

It is important to remember that forgiveness does not consist in words or a postcard sent, but in the realization of one's mistakes. Apologies must come from the heart, and only then will they be heard.

True forgiveness means giving up personal resentment and ill feelings towards the perpetrator of the offense. To restore good relations, sometimes one phrase is enough: "Let's forgive each other our mistakes and be wiser in the future. Happy Sunday!"

It doesn't hurt to apologize for bad deeds at any other time, because Christianity prescribes forgiveness and repentance for believers.
