The sixth day of Maslenitsa can rightfully be called the national women's Day. Saturday, called Sister—in-law gatherings, is an occasion for girls to get together, discuss everyday life and the latest news, surprise each other with culinary talents and tell fortunes for the future. Izvestia tells us what the sixth day of Maslenitsa Week is about and how it is customary to spend it.

Sister-in-law gatherings: customs and traditions

The name of the day speaks for itself. On the sixth day of Shrovetide, young wives should invite their relatives from their husband's side — sisters-in-law, and with them their girlfriends. If the guest is unmarried, then the rest of the invited girls should be free from marital ties, and if the sister-in-law has a spouse, then the women in the company should be the keepers of the family hearth.

The leisure time of the gathered girls also depends on this. Unmarried people are supposed to discuss gossip and potential suitors, and guess at their betrothed. And if both the hostess and the guests have already found their companions in life, then the conversation flows into the channel of household chores.

An important part of the gatherings is a richly laid table. The hostess should surprise the guests with her hospitality, generosity and cooking. And after everyone has eaten enough, the girls' company can go outside to join the traditional Carnival festivities.

The sixth day of Maslenitsa – 2025: what can and cannot be done

Despite the fact that Maslenitsa is a carefree and fun time, some rules still need to be followed. For example, it is unforgivable for a hostess to invite guests into an uncleaned house or to show them disrespect and hostility.

One should be benevolent, welcoming and generous to all one's neighbors during the festive week. Conflicts, quarrels, and refusal of help are unacceptable. It is important to treat everyone who comes to the house and make sure that the guest leaves satisfied.

Earlier, Izvestia told readers what is supposed to be done on the fifth day of Maslenitsa — Mother-in-law's evenings.
