On May 18, Russia celebrates a special professional and historical holiday — Baltic Fleet Day. This is the oldest unit in the Russian flotilla, which has many victories and military achievements. In 2025, the holiday falls on a Sunday. Izvestia tells about the history and traditions of the significant day.

When is the Day of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy in 2025

The Day of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy is celebrated annually on May 18. The date of the holiday coincides with the day of the great battle at the mouth of the Neva River in 1703. Emperor Peter I led naval forces against the Swedes and won a major victory — two enemy ships became the trophy.

Then 30 boats with soldiers of the Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky regiments took to the water against the enemy, but this particular composition is considered to be the forerunner of the Baltic Fleet, because immediately after that the first large frigate of the Baltic Fleet was launched, and the construction of the Admiralty Shipyard and the future Kronstadt base began, and all participants in the significant battle received medals with the inscription "The unprecedented happens."

Along with the fleet, the city of St. Petersburg grew on the banks of the Neva River, which became the new capital of Russia. In the following years, the naval forces proved themselves more than once in decisive battles and ensured the protection of Russia's borders from the north-west.

Baltic Fleet Day on May 18 — traditions

Baltic Fleet Day celebrations are usually spot-on. For example, in the "capital" of the naval forces, Kronstadt, the celebration is combined with the City Day. Large-scale celebrations are also taking place in Baltiysk, Kaliningrad region, where military vessels are based. As a rule, on May 18, a solemn march and reviews of the combat readiness of ships and military personnel take place in the city. In some years, open deck days are held.

Naval museums are opening themed exhibitions by the date of the celebration, and the media are covering the history of naval battles using newsreels and historical documents. The military themselves receive congratulations from relatives and colleagues, and the leadership presents the most distinguished fighters with awards.

Earlier, Izvestia told about the history and traditions of the Day of the Submariner.
