When to sanctify Easter cakes: service schedule

Many people associate Easter with traditional treats such as cakes and colored eggs. Before the holiday, they are supposed to be consecrated in the temple. Izvestia tells us when the ceremony will take place in 2025.

You can only sanctify cakes and eggs on one day — Holy Saturday. The ritual is usually performed in the afternoon from about 12:00 until the temple closes. In some churches, treats are also consecrated on Saturday night or Easter morning. This is usually done in large churches with a large flow of parishioners.

A service at the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, where Easter baskets will be consecrated, will be held from 12:00 to 17:00 on Holy Saturday, April 19.

In other churches of the Russian Orthodox Church, the time of worship may vary slightly, it is recommended to check it with the temple servants or on their official pages on the Internet.

It is noteworthy that just after noon Moscow time, the Holy Fire will be held in Jerusalem. The ceremony traditionally enhances the solemn expectation of the main holiday and fills the faithful with joy.

In 2025, Orthodox Christians will witness the descent of the Holy Fire on April 19.

After returning from the temple, they prepare for the Midnight Mass, which traditionally begins at 23:00. It is customary to try Easter treats after returning home. This is considered to be a reward for those who observed a strict fast lasting as long as 48 days.
